Chakras for Self-Empowerment
Limited Capacity seats available

The chakras are the headquarters of each element in our body: earth, water, fire, air, and space. They have a profound effect on our physical, emotional, and energetic states and govern much of our decision making in life. When we are conscious of the chakras and how they influence us, we can use the tools of sound and visualization to help us come into alignment with our truest, most authentic self. When the chakras are disharmonized, so are the choices we make. In this full-day intensive, you will explore how the different chakras manifest and effect you in everyday living. Alan will teach you how to use the tools of kriya and meditation, while Sarah Platt-Finger will lead you through lecture and asanas to empower you to live a life of wisdom, integrity, and unbound potential.

Stability and Mobility
Limited Capacity seats available

In this two-hour class, you will explore the idea that stability and mobility are (in many ways) the same. Stability can be defined as your capacity to return to a certain joint configuration or orientation after a disturbance; mobility is your ability to control your movements—or flexibility plus strength. These concepts are not limited only to the physical body and/or postural yoga. Having a stable yet flexible mind is also important. After all, as the ancient Chinese saying goes, "That which doesn't bend, breaks." That's why in this session, you will learn to bend with control, to stabilize without rigidity, and to cultivate ease and confidence in your body, mind, and the entirety of your being.

Playful Practice and The Art of Resilience
Limited Capacity seats available

Resilience is one of the most important benefits of a consistent yoga practice. With greater resilience, you become more adaptable, flexible yet stable, and even more open in the mind and heart. Resilience is your ability to adapt to stress, and it's the capacity to bounce back when challenges throw you off balance. Life can be challenging and unpredictable. Practice can help you learn to flow with the unpredictable, unexpected, and seemingly random nature of it all—and maybe even enjoy the occasionally bumpy ride.

In this half-day workshop, you will use intelligent and playful practice, variability, and self-compassion as a way to strengthen and fortify yourself. Playful practice is inherently varied—it is about the joy of process and provides a rich (and fun) opportunity to cultivate new connections within yourself. You will explore traditional yoga poses as well as novel pose variations and awaken the resilient being within.

The Art of Teaching Restorative Yoga with Minimal Props
Limited Capacity filling up

Not enough props? No problem. Most studios aren't equipped with a variety of props (or even enough props) for large classes. But sometimes less is more. In this half-day workshop, you will discover how to deploy minimal props to maximize relaxation and create a deeply nourishing practice. You'll also explore tools to bring restoratives into a Vinyasa or Hatha practice without pulling out a pile of props. You will be amazed at how many ways you can fold a blanket and create support from so little.

While Jillian Pransky's morning session (Mindful Flow. Minimal Props. Maximal Relaxation.) guides you into deep, minimal-prop experience, this afternoon segment covers the fundamental science behind restoratives, propping, and alignment when only 1 to 3 props are available. You'll learn 50 ways you can prop 8 essential poses, and you will get to try many of the variations yourself. You will leave with a big new bag of tricks to incorporate into your flow classes, privates, meditation, and restorative classes.

All levels are welcome but this workshop is especially relevant for yoga and Pilates teachers, body workers, physical therapists, and caretakers.

Reclaiming the Body: #MeToo and the Yoga of Resilience
Limited Capacity seats available

As yoga students and teachers voice stories of sexual misconduct, bias, and intimidation in the #metoo era, we can start to piece together a story of power imbalance that goes back decades, if not centuries.

Acknowledging these destructive patterns is the first step toward collective change. But what is the next step? How can the yoga community train the lens of awareness on its own behavior and dynamics? How do we establish boundaries, safety, and a system of accountability?

Join Yoga Journal LIVE! and several special guests for a panel discussion that offers a multidisciplinary perspective and practical advice on next steps for teachers, practitioners, and the industry at large. Panelists will touch on the collective pain brought about by revelations, the marginalization of vulnerable voices, the science of trauma and how it can leave a lasting residue, concepts of resilience and post-traumatic growth, and ideas to help us move from #MeToo to never again. How do we reclaim yoga and the mind-body benefits that have served us all?

Panelists:
  • Naimah Johnson, licensed therapist, yoga instructor, doula, and community activist
  • Bo Forbes, psychologist, yoga teacher trainer, founder of Embodied Awareness, and research collaborator in the science of embodiment and well-being
  • David Lipsius, CEO and president of Yoga Alliance

Fascial Play: Hydrating Our Connective Tissue Matrix
Limited Capacity filling up

The connective tissue matrix is a hologram for interconnectedness: It links every cell in our bodies. Far from being a mere physical entity, this web is sentient and intelligent. It plays a key role in the health of our nervous system, emotional brain, and pain pathways. In this session, we will review the three pillars of healthy connective tissue. We’ll learn techniques for integrating connective tissue work with special issues, such as trauma, empathic dysregulation, anxiety, and depression. We’ll also experience a variety of fascial release techniques to incorporate into our personal practice, group classes, and private yoga sessions.

Most yogis realize that core stability is a key element to both a happy back and a sustainable asana practice. But a strong core is so much more than strong abs. Strengthening your core is as much about cultivating tone in the back and side body as it is about your front body. The Healing Power of Forgiveness
Limited Capacity seats available

Forgiveness is perhaps the most powerful tool we have for healing ourselves. To forgive another, heals oneself, just as anger toward another poisons oneself. Anger and resentment destroy our lives. For the body to heal, often times what is most vital is to heal the broken heart or spirit. Failure to forgive affects our stress level, power to heal the body, discernment, and all our relationships. The first part of this seminar is a powerful lecture on forgiving others; the second part will address forgiving oneself. Max has taken the message of forgiveness around the world to a people of many faiths and nationalities. Bring your mat and writing materials. Appropriate for all levels.

Yoga for Inner Peace
Limited Capacity seats available

What happens when women get together? Something immeasurably powerful and transformative can come from the support of other women. We set down our barriers and dwell in our commonalities, compassion, and understanding. Even though this is only a half of day, the goal is to leave you feeling like you have just been on a weeklong women’s retreat. In her 20 years of teaching women's retreats, Saidman Yee has come to understand that a lot of times we are struggling with similar issues and thinking that we are alone. Emotional needs of a woman are different from those of a man. We will target common areas where tension, trauma, and secrets can be buried with the intention of unleashing joy. We will use asana, pranayama, meditation, journaling and dialogue to dig into areas that keep us stuck. Why and where are we stuck? What are we afraid of? Are we living our potential? Are we using our voices to speak our truth? Do we understand our importance and validity? We will experiment with practices that address issues such as forgiveness and confidence. We will explore different tools that unlock bindings in the body, breath, and brain that keep you from realizing that you are enough.

Trauma, Recovery, and the Mind-Body Relationship
Limited Capacity seats available

The #MeToo movement and current political climate have brought issues of power, domination, and the body to the surface of our collective awareness. The prevalence of interpersonal and systemic violence toward women, people of color, and other vulnerable populations is out in the open. How can yoga, mindfulness, and body-based contemplative practices help? In this daylong workshop, we explore the science of trauma, including the oscillation between panic and dissociation. We expand the rigid social binary that makes us either “broken” or “whole,” the ways in which the bodily archive of trauma can re-emerge at periodic intervals, and practices that help us during such times. We consider what it means to be a teacher, healer, or helping professional who has also suffered sexualabuse, assault, or harassment, and how the emerging field of post-traumatic growth can offer us inspiration. What helps us refine our voice and develop our inner power and use our voice for ourselves and others? Practices will include mindful movement, connective tissue work, dynamic rest, and supine, walking, and seated meditation.

Creative Sequencing

Skillful sequencing allows students to experience deep opening, strength, and success in asana. It's based on an understanding of anatomy, alignment, and the relationships between postures. But great sequencing takes this essential foundation and transforms it into something vital and creative. In this half-day Intensive for teachers and interested students, you'll begin by exploring the idea of sequencing as a narrative and energetic arc that builds progressively to a peak and cools down to Savasana.
